American Myth Investigators: America’s Original Tall Tales Investigate the Washington & Betsy Ross Myths | Grades 3–12
$3.00
Did the signers of the Declaration really lose everything? Was Hancock’s famous signature actually an act of defiance? Did the signing even happen on July 4?
The answer to all three is more complicated than you think and more interesting.
The Signers’ Sacrifice gives students 12 myth investigations, 3 investigative roles, and the most important question in historical thinking: why did we need this story to be bigger than the truth?
Grades 3–12. Print and go. Works for classrooms and homeschools.
Description
Before Paul Bunyan, before Davy Crockett, before the Wild West, America’s tall tale tradition started in the colonies.
George Washington and the cherry tree. Betsy Ross and the flag. Two of the most famous stories in American culture. Both almost certainly invented.
But that is not really the point. The point is why we invented them and what they tell us about what Americans need to believe about themselves and their history.
A History of America’s Original Tall Tales: Colonial Era Starter Pack is a lean, engaging myth investigation activity that introduces students to the American Myth Investigators framework through two of the most familiar founding stories. Using the Solo Investigator role, students work through three analytical lenses — the Detective, the Psychologist, and the Journalist — on each case file, then record their verdicts and respond to a final reflection question.
It takes 30 to 45 minutes. It works for any grade between 3 and 12. And it teaches a framework for evaluating historical claims that students will use long after the activity is finished.
