Utterly divine dairy-free homemade red velvet ice cream recipe

Summer is made of dripping ice cream cones, unending giggles, and sitting in the sun and

I want to give all of the to my kids… every day.
But I don’t want to fill them with processed sugars.
Dairy free red velvet ice cream recipe. Vegan, Paleo, Whole30, and vegetarian, and KID approved. It's even a healthy frozen treat because it includes both fruits and veggies but you would NEVER know!

So instead of store bought ice cream or running after the incessantly singing ice cream truck, we file into the house to make our own unforgettable frozen treats. And in the process we’re making memories too!

6 ingredient red velvet ice cream recipe

4 bananas, sliced and pre-frozen
1/2 avocado
2 Tbsp cocoa powder
3 or 4 small beets (cooked) or powdered beets
1 1/2 cup coconut milk
4 dates or honey for sweetness
(Optional) Cacao nibs for sprinkles

Homemade red velvet ice cream instructions

The great thing about this recipe is that it’s suitable for everyone.

Whether you will eat anything that comes your way or even subscribe to a vegan or whole30 lifestyle, there are variations to make this tasty treat something to scoop up and serve at your next cook out or even at your kids’ birthday parties.

In fact, without dairy, food coloring or food dyes, and all the yuckies that can be found in commercial ice cream options. Which makes this ice cream an allergy friendly frozen treat option!

After you have opened up your bananas, sliced them, and given them an adequate amount of time to freeze, you’re halfway done!
While your bananas are freezing, you can cook your beets if you choose not to go with a powdered option. Don’t worry, just as with traditional red velvet cake, beets are used for color, but you can’t even taste them!

I particularly like using real, cooked beets over the powder because it feels like I am adding some nutritiousness to the ice cream.

So maybe healthy ice cream isn’t an oxymoron after all.

Blend everything in a powerful blender, such as a Ninja, Vitamix, or a large food processor. Adjust sweetness to taste by adding more honey or dates as desired.  Pour in freezer safe dish and allow to freeze for a few hours.

A bread loaf dish is actually perfect for making homemade ice cream tubs!

Scoop up and enjoy.

If it’s still not sweet enough, you can make your own syrup with honey and cacao or cocoa. If you’re vegan or whole30, sprinkle with cacao nibs on top to dress it up!

  1. This looks delicious!! Will definitely be trying! Could you use agave instead of honey?

    1. We personally do not use agave (I think I have an unopened bottle of it in my pantry haha), but if it’s what you’re used to in terms of a sweetener, it’s worth a shot. But again, I have no experience on the conversion rate.
