Escape the Kings Tyranny Declaration Escape Room Grievances Activity Grades 3-12

$8.00

Students take on the role of a colonial aide with one mission: document six acts of tyranny and deliver the evidence to Congress before dawn. This no-prep, print-and-play paper escape room challenges grades 3-12 to work through six grievance-focused challenges and crack the final code. Part of the Five Pillars of the Declaration of Independence framework.

Description

The date is July 3rd, 1776. Nearly midnight in Philadelphia. The evidence that proves the King’s tyranny must reach Congress before dawn, but a Loyalist spy has locked you inside the Pennsylvania State House. Six locked cases stand between you and history.

In this printable escape room, students take on the role of a colonial aide tasked with documenting six key grievances against King George III. Each challenge connects a specific act of tyranny to real historical events, primary source evidence, and the philosophical arguments colonists used to justify independence. Crack all six challenges and collect the code letters that spell the final unlock word.

This is a self-contained, paper-based, no-prep activity. Print, distribute, and go.

Six Grievance-Focused Challenges

Each challenge covers a distinct grievance and uses a different activity type, including matching, sequencing, true/false, analysis, and logic. Students connect each grievance to the real historical events behind it and to the broader argument for independence.

Grievances covered: taxation without representation, quartering of soldiers, standing armies in peacetime, dissolving colonial legislatures, denial of trial by jury, and cutting off colonial trade.

Differentiation Built In

The teacher guide includes specific facilitation notes for grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Younger students are supported with read-aloud suggestions and partner work guidance. Older students are directed to connect challenges to Enlightenment philosophy and construct evidence-based arguments. Advanced philosophical discussion questions for grades 9-12 are included at the end.

About the Five Pillars Framework

This product is Pillar 1 of the Five Pillars of the Declaration of Independence, a complete framework for teaching the Declaration from every essential angle. Pillar 1 covers the grievances: what the colonists complained about, why those complaints mattered, and how they made the case for independence. Each pillar is available as a standalone product or as part of a complete bundle at karacarrero.com.

Works as an opening hook before a full Declaration unit, a culminating review after Pillar 1 study, or a bridge activity between pillars.
