Today is a wonderful post from Dayna at Lemon Lime Adventures! She gives a fabulous list of some of the best books for kids and adults of all ages to learn and discover more about our Earth, Recycling, and Earth Day. Be sure to check them out and purchase an Earth Day Book to read on April 22nd!
Earth Day is fast approaching and many of you might be searching for ways to celebrate with your children. I am excited to be sharing with you today as part of this Earth Day Series. I have created a collection of must read books for babies, preschoolers, grade schoolers, and even parents that can be used to celebrate Earth Day and Recycling all year long.

While I love Earth Day and everything it stands for, over at Lemon Lime Adventures, I try to teach my children to live every day like it is Earth Day. We have cloth diapered all three of our children. We compost in our urban garden, create upcycled and recycled crafts and we try to leave the smallest footprint as possible. My husband even likes to call me “worm hands” because once the weather warms up you can find me digging right beside my children in the dirt.
My hope is that you will love this list as much as I do and be able to find some wonderful ideas to foster eco-conscious habits every day of the year with you and your family or students.
Earth Day Books For Babies and About Babies
The Carrot Seed ~ Ruth Krauss
Eco Babies Wear Green ~ Michelle Sinclair Colman
One Tree (Green Start) ~ IKids Hardcover
The Little Gardener (Teenie Greenies) ~ Jan Gerardi
Green Baby ~ Susannah Marriott {Note from ALLterNATIVElearning: This book was basically the guide I used while pregnant to decide how green I wanted to be as a parent and how to go about the path I chose as it discusses options and steps to make greener choices with research to back up each choice.}
Earth Day Books for Young Children
Not A Box ~ Antoinette Portis
Michael Recycle~ Ellie Bethel
I Stink! ~ Kate McMullan
Smash! Mash! Crash! There Goes the Trash! ~ Barbara Odanaka
A Box Story ~ Kenneth Kit Lamug
Earth Day Books for Older Children
The Adventures of a Plastic Bottle: A Story About Recycling (Little Green Books) ~ Alison Inches
The Everything Environment Book ~ Sheri Amsel
Our Big Home ~ Linda Glaser
The Lorax ~ Dr. Seuss {Note from ALLterNATIVElearning: this is our all-time favorite book and movie about the environment. It paints a wonderful picture of personal responsibility and its contribution to changing our habits to protect the Earth.}
The Earth and I ~ Frank Asch
Earth Day Books for Adults
Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair With Trash ~ Edward Humes
Square Foot Gardening ~ Mel Bartholomew
The Backyard Homestead ~ Carleen Madigan
No Impact Man ~ Colin Beavan {Note from ALLterNATIVElearning: This whole project is a fabulous experiment to try with your family. This is my favorite Earth Day Book because it encourages you to evaluate your own impact on the Earth. Even if you can’t achieve “no impact”, striving for a lower impact is the goal!}
I hope you have been able to find some familiar books, some books that peaked your interest, and some that can help you celebrate Earth Day all year long.
