DIY Peg Board Tool Art – Homemade Gifts for Him

In our family, we try to be creative and resourceful in our gift giving which many times means doing homemade gifts and using great secondhand finds! And I don’t know about you, but it is so hard to figure out what to give my husband (or any man in my life really), even if I am going to buy something. This is just a fun way to make some DIY tool art and turn it into a decorative conversation piece in his office or even to hang his workshop. Plus, it was afun way to get my daughter involved to help create it. How to make a Functional Homemade Gift for Him

So not only did I want to make something that was unique and that I thought he would love, but I also wanted to make it functional if desired. That mean that making it on a peg board, it was able to be used to hang other things (for instance, the bottom can have extra hooks to hold belts or tools if hung in the garage or workshop, etc.) or it could serve as a living piece of art by change out the photos periodically. They even make pegboard baskets so you could add a tray at the bottom.

Supplies

  • Peg Board (Comes in all shapes, colors, and sizes!)
  • Peg Board Hooks
  • An assortment of Antique and Rusty Tools (or new ones if so desired)
  • A Marker
  • Pictures of great memories
  • Optional – zip ties and glue

It’s actually a really easy project. The hardest part would be hunting for the old tools… but that’s actually the fun part. For this piece of art, I actually had some old tools my grandad gave us a few years back, which made this piece more sentimental. Plus, it’s hard to restore those rusty tools and this gives them new life in a new way.

You will want to make sure you have plenty of peg board hooks because if you choose not to use zip ties or glue to hold each tool in place, you will need to strategically arrange them to support the structure.

You will notice that I tried to arrange the tools like a puzzle in order to balance and piece them together. We just happened to have the “U” pieces otherwise I would have had to do more shaping. If you choose to use new tools, you can find that in the lock section of a hardware store or an amazon as a U Bolt.

And finally after I got it all put together, I had to add a fun sentiment so I added “I will love you even when we’re old and rusty”
