Back in 2015, I started looking into ways I cook healthy meals without spending my whole life in the kitchen. I came across this glorious machine called the instant pot and immediately fell in love.
But at the time, most of the pressure cooking advice I could find was old and outdated.
Over the last several years I have worked to develop a comprehensive Instant Pot guide for both beginners and even experienced users. I’ve done it to help personal friends gain confidence in electric pressure cooking as I have been told I should have a car magnet proclaiming my love for the Instant Pot company.

Which recipes are best to start with in the Instant Pot?
My recommendation to personal friends is to start with a simple side dish or a soup. Something like potatoes, oatmeal, boiled eggs, etc. that won’t ruin the whole night if it doesn’t go as planned.
But here are three of our most popular Instant Pot recipes:
- One Pot Pressure Cooked Chicken Florentine
- Instant Pot Tuscan Tortellini
- Taco Tuesday Pork Carnitas
- Easy side dishes in the Instant Pot
- My Friend Corinne has a great instant pot pork tenderloin recipe that’s SO easy.
I struggled with this. My first IP was a 6-quart LUX. I loved it but felt like maybe I was missing out on something amazing by not having a DUO. So instead of getting a second liner like I had planned, I invested in a second pot. This time an 8-quart DUO.
And there were some differences I didn’t even expect like 2 vs 3 prongs n the plugs. So I put together a guide that went through this as well as all of the jargon and abbreviations in instant pot recipes that newbies might not understand.
For what it’s worth, we own a 3 quart now too and I have purchased 2 or 3 others for friends. So I have bought a lot of Instant Pots!
I often see people ask what size instant pot is best for different size families. The best way to judge this is based on what size crock pot you use (standard is around 6 quarts), but even as a family of five, we use our three quart the most.

What does a beginner need to know about the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker?
Nope, it’s not 100% instant, but wow think about all the things you can do without having to babysit your meal on the stove or in the oven.
