The Declaration Is Adopted

Your Mission

Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson wrote the first draft in 17 days. Congress debated and edited it for two more days before approving it. Thomas Paine, whose words had helped move the colonies toward this moment, had written that the colonists had the power to begin the world over again. Read the opening of the second paragraph below.
