Exploring & Learning About Bodily Functions

We all know that moment of terror that every mom gets when our kids is the one who starts talking about toots or is the first to point out that boys have penises and girls have vaginas… but then again, some of us are the proud parents who love that their kids know and are unashamed of their bodies! I want to teach my kids about the body and to love their bodies and how they work. But I also know that not everyone is super open about teaching little ones about the body and bodily functions. Personally, I think it’s important for kids to know themselves and how we all are both unique and similar as human beings. So that’s why teaching toddlers and preschoolers body parts and learning about bodily functions is a fun, taboo learning theme to explore!

Books about the Body and Bodily Functions

Tot school got more fun for us once we were able to explore more in depth subjects and when my daughter became more curious about the books we were reading. It’s amazing how a toddler can benefit from books that are beyond their years to explore topics that are otherwise over their heads. Since our bodies and bodily functions are so odd, but intriguing this is a fun book list to help explore some both fun and tough to explain subjects! In our tot school theme about the body, we had so much fun exploring, and now we are adding to our collection of books we love to learn even more about the human body!

The Gas We Pass – What toddler doesn’t love learning about toots?! My daughter giggles and exclaims with excitement every time she passes gas that she tooted and is always the first to point out when someone else does too. This is just a fun book explaining why we even pass gas, making it great for both toddlers and older kids.

Breasts – As a breastfeeding mom, this books is one I love to see available. I think it is especially important for children that haven’t been around breastfeeding as uch and will soon be exposed to a new baby. Even my 2 year old that is still breastfeeding is fascinated with breasts and nipples, making this a straight-forward and informative books for her.

The Holes in Your Nose –  Just one of those things we all have, but how do we even explain that to a young child?! I love this book because not only does it explain breathing, but it also explore the holes animals use for breathing!

See Inside your Body –  This is just an awesome book! What better way to explore and explain to a child what is under our skin?! To be able to lift a flap and explain that our heart, lungs, ribs, etc are under there is a great visual to help them understand the body as a whole.

Everyone Poops –  Definitely a must-have classic book for toddlers when toilet training or just for kids who are looking to understand that pooping is something that is normal.

All About Scabs –  Aren’t scabs weird? But Aren’t our bodies amazing? This explores how our bodies heal and maybe it’s a great book to put back in a closet and pull out for the first time when your child has a big scab! (And maybe they won’t pick at it since it will help them understand a bit better too)

Contemplating Your Belly Button – Especially for kids that have outies, this is a fun book exploring how people and animals all have belly buttons. So many kids really love playing with their belly buttons and they’re such a topic of fascination, so why not explore it?!

Why Do People Eat? – Whether it’s a question your little one is asking or maybe they’re not eating, this is a great book to understand that we all have to eat to be able to learn and play. It even goes over how we need vitamins and minerals to be healthy and why we get hungry!

The Quest to DigestMy two year old and I talk daily about how we chew and eat food and it goes down into our tummies. Therefore, this is a great book to help go a little further and understand digestion of food. It also explores that food actually does something for us beyond satiate hunger pangs which I thought was good for her to understand.

Where’s Baby’s Belly Button? –  For younger babies and toddlers this is a really cute flap book that explore body parts in general. This one has been well loved across all age ranges though too, to the point the flaps have been re-adhered several times.

Your Fantastic Elastic Brain – This book explores that the brain not only fills a space in our head, but that it is responsible for every part of our daily lives from smelling and seeing to dreaming. My favorite part is that it talks about how making mistakes is actually important! The brain can be kind of an abstract concept, but this helps boil it down a little better for young learners.

Amazing You!This book explores some tough questions like body parts and anatomy as well as where babies come from and pregnancy. I love the idea of focusing on how amazing our bodies are while answering questions like this! It is very blunt and up front about our anatomy though so it may not be the perfect book for every family.

The Skin you Live In – Whether just exploring this largest organ of the body or trying to explain diversity is just a color of the same thing, this is a lighthearted book about how we do everything in our own skin.

My 5 Senses – The Let’s See & Find Out books are some of my favorite when approaching scientific topics with toddlers and preschoolers. This one is pretty simple, but explores that we have to have certain body parts to experiences the senses we have every day.

Before You Were Born – The concept of bringing forth new life is so difficult for young kids, but is one that should be approached regardless of if you or someone you know is pregnant! I love teaching toddlers about how they grew inside of momma’s belly and lived in there before meeting everyone on the outside world.
