Three Voices, One Date: An Armistice Day Primary Source Lesson
$4.00
One date, one hour, three very different jobs. Students read primary sources from two presidents and a king to discover how the same moment that became the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Over time, 11:00 a.m. on November 11, has been changed to mean different things such as Veteran’s Day, Remembrance Day, and a day for poppies. A ready-to-print lesson for ages 5 to 18, with an answer key.
Description
Most of us teach Veterans Day in a single sentence: the war ended at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
However, this lesson dives into the idea of who decided what that hour should mean, and did they all decide the same thing?
Three Voices, One Date puts real primary documents in front of your students and lets them do the work of a historian. They start by looking at the day itself, then read three leaders speaking about the same hour in different places and different years. Pride, Silence, and Honoring the dead are all key themes and students will have to not just identify but also explain why they matter.

More about what to Expect
- No prep. Download, print, and teach.
- One lesson, every age. Siblings or a mixed co-op class can study the same documents together at their own level.
- Neutral and secular. The lesson does not tell students how to feel about war, holidays, or ceremonies. It teaches them to read carefully and decide for themselves.
- Built from real documents. Every source is a genuine primary document, not a retelling.
Use it for a morning basket, a co-op class, a history unit on World War I, or as part of your Veterans Day and Armistice Day plans.
