After a year of not seeing much family, my girls and I made a trip to Oklahoma to see family. It was 5 exhausting but glorious weeks traveling familiar roads to see and hug missed faces.
It was an unexpected trip, but one I will forever treasure. In that time, we were able to see friends, brothers, sisters, grandparents, and even great-grandparents. More heartfelt memories were made in a week than probably any year in my kids’ live prior.
One night in particular, we sat down to eat dinner at my mom’s house and my daughter exclaimed, “MOM, did you know they make ice cream sandwiches?!”
My mom politely added “They do! And you and I helped great-grandma buy some at the store this week, didn’t we?” to which my daughter quickly belted ” yeah, AND I HAD ONE!”
Everyone at the table, including myself, started laughing hysterically because everyone knows I don’t typically let my kids eat sugar. So my mom, turning 3 shades of red, started trying to explain the situation.
But instead of getting upset, we decided in that moment that the special bond and the treasured memories that my sweet three-year-old and my 88-year-old grandmother could share would be through ice cream sandwiches…That, of course, coupled with strawberry picking and lazily rocking on the porch swing.
Tears fills my eyes as I even think about the special bond the two of them formed even in the few short visits they had as I remember the tight bond I had with my own “Great Gran”.
They’re all memories delicately hanging on our family tree. Stories that will be told for years, and a picture like that, will be treasured and held so dear to our hearts. They’re love stories that connect generations of women in our family with one another.
Because while my daughter may share ice cream sandwiches with her great grandmother, and I shared a love of pink and purple with mine, there will be another great small moment that turns into a big memory in the future.
So when we got home, my daughter drew up a picture and wrote a card to her great grandmother. And because she’s stuck on “thank you” notes it turned into something of a “thanks for the memories” of sorts and “for my first ice cream sandwich”.
